Can You Hire a Van with Points on Your Licence?

A lot of drivers have never had any endorsements or points applied to their licence – there are also those who have for one reason or another. In this article we will be exploring what the repercussions of having penalties / endorsements when it comes to hiring a van. Different rental companies have different rules when it comes to endorsements on your licence – it’s always best to check with the rental company for their requirements if you are unsure.

Major / Minor Offences

Points / offences are split into many different categories – but they can be summarized into 2 groups: Major and Minor offences. Minor offences include Speeding Offences (SP), Careless Driving Offences (CD), Traffic Direction & Sign Offences (TS) and much more…. Some rental companies allow you to hire a van with minor convictions recorded on your licence but it’s always best to check beforehand to ensure that you will be covered to drive the vehicle.

Major convictions are more serious and different rental companies have different rules when it comes to providing insurance with your hire. Driving Bans & Disqualifications

If you have a driving ban / disqualification within the past 5 years, then you won’t be able to hire any vehicle from any company for up to five years after having your licence returned.

Why hiring becomes more difficult

All hire companies, including us, are covered by insurance which covers you as the driver. Most insurance providers have allowances in their contracts for a certain number of points.
